Q: Who can join the classes?

A: Anyone! Whether you're a total beginner, a seasoned musician, or just curious about Japanese culture, these sessions are designed for all skill levels. No prior experience with shamisen or reading music is required.

 

Q: What should I bring?

A: Just yourself and an open mind! If you have your own shamisen, feel free to bring it, but instruments will also be available for use during the session. We also have left-handed shamisens at the dojo.

 

Q: How long are the sessions?

A: Classes typically last 60–90 minutes, depending on the format.

 

Q: Where do the classes take place?

A: Sessions are held in a comfortable converted traditional Kyoto Machiya converted into our shamisen dojo. Online lessons can be taken any where you like that has good wifi signal.

 

Q: What will I be able to play by the end of the class?

A: By the end of your session, you'll have learned the basics of playing the shamisen and one Japanese scale. You will also have the opportunity to play along with your classmates and Jack Sensei towards the end of your session.

 

Q: Is this class only about music?

A: Not at all! While the shamisen is the focus, this experience also offers a deeper dive into Japanese culture, history, and traditions, making it much more than just a music lesson.

 

Q: Is there an age limit?

A: Lessons are available for anyone from 8-80. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. 

Q: Is there parking at the dojo?

A: Unfortunately, we do not offer parking however there are three paid parking lots within 5 minutes walking from the dojo. Please contact us if you need assistance finding parking.

Q: Are lessons accessible for individuals with mobility challanges? 

A: Our main lesson space is on the second floor of our machiya which is only accessible by stairs. We are happy to arrange lessons on the first floor when needed. However, please note that there is still one step at the building's entrance. If you have any accessibilty questions, please contact us before booking and we will do our best to ensure you have a great experience.
